The Essex Inn offers its guests elegant and spacious accommodations and fine southern hospitality in a lovely setting nestled in the heart of Tappahannock’s downtown historic district.

The Roane-Wright-Trible House as the Inn is also known, is a Georgian mansion built about 1850 by Dr. Lawrence Roane and an excellent example of Greek revival architecture. It has a long and varied history and is even said to have played several interesting roles in the Civil War.

The Inn has been carefully and authentically restored to its original grandeur and has been furnished with period antiques, reproductions, and family heirlooms including a baby grand piano.
Upon entering this grand house you will immediately be amazed by the grand proportions and Old World elegance. Each room features 20-foot ceilings, 3 over 4 windows with the original glass, and the original wide plank floors. On the main floor every room features a unique chandelier, some original to the house, some acquired during the renovation, each with a unique history of its own.

There are two common rooms to relax in, the music room and the library complete with books, games, puzzles and fireplace.
Wi-Fi is available throughout the main house and the “Quarters.” A screened in porch and a private brick courtyard provide outdoor relaxation and smoking facilities.

There are 8 guestrooms, four in the main house and four suites in the “Quarters”. They are all equipped with cable TV, individually controlled air conditioning and heat, hair dryers, irons, smooth-as-silk ironed sheets, plenty of oversized soft towels, bathrobes and our custom amenities. These stunning accommodations are the perfect place to spend your next VA vacation. In addition, a quiet sunroom at the top of the stairs allows guests to “slip away and enjoy the afternoon sun”.
The inn provides several indoor/outdoor cats for your enjoyment and with prior approval, allows your pets to stay with you in some of our suites. Please see our pet policy.
A full three-course gourmet breakfast is served in the breakfast room every morning. Elegantly presented on silver and china, this three-course meal includes our own blend of fresh ground coffee; low fat granola; yogurt; seasonal fruits and/or homemade breads and homemade jellies; and house favorites such as Belgian waffles topped with seasonal fruit and served with bacon: or our original Crab ‘N Grits.

Guests staying in "The Quarters" have 2 options for breakfast. The full breakfast served in the main house between 8-10 am. Or, for those with their own schedules or looking for more privacy, an extended continental breakfast including homemade muffins, English muffins and/or bagels,
yogurt, fruit, cereal, and juice will provided in the suite. Please specify your preference when making your reservation.
The Butler's Pantry, which includes a beer tap, refrigerator, microwave and a full array of snacks, is open to all guests at all times, and a screened-in porch and a private brick courtyard provide outdoor relaxation and smoking facilities.

Rates range from $149-$189 and include a full three-course gourmet breakfast.

A two night minimum stay is required on the weekends.
The Inn can also be rented for small private dinners and meetings, and is a stunning Virginia wedding location. The dining room will accommodate up to 20 for sit down meals and up to 100 for stand-up affairs. Allow us to host your small wedding ceremony and reception and then stay on to celebrate with a romantic honeymoon retreat in our luxurious guest accommodations.

As the inn is very popular, it is recommended that reservations be made as soon as trip plans are made. Certain weekends require extended stays.

Bob and Janice McGee bring an eclectic array of experiences to their new endeavor at the Essex Inn. Most recently from Carmel, California they have also lived on the island of Mallorca, Spain (five years) and in England (one year). Having been in the travel business for most of their careers they have visited many countries and enjoyed experiencing new cultures, and, most importantly, new foods. Janice also loves experimenting with ethnic foods for their rich colors, tastes and textures. Janice’s love of cooking and baking started in high school and has continued throughout her life. In Carmel, she was enrolled in the culinary course at the local college. Her other passion is sewing and for 15 years has had her own business designing and fabricating custom slipcovers and soft furnishings.

Bob has a variety of interests as well. Photography, Early American history, birding and furniture making keep him busy.

It was while in England that Bob and Janice were first introduced to inn-keeping, managing a 9 room country inn just outside Hereford in the Midlands. The experience proved so enjoyable, they later decided to accept B and B guests in their historic Carmel home. Not being content with their small Carmel operation they came to Virginia to seek out a more dynamic and challenging opportunity. Now, happily ensconced in the heart of America’s early beginnings, they look forward to welcoming you to the beautiful and historic Essex Inn. Their door is open and you won’t find a warmer welcome anywhere.

Come to the Essex Inn where history, serenity and elegant comfort await you.
